Our Community

Visit our rural country setting, beautiful with rolling hills, tree-lined streams, and rock formations.  Sylvan Grove and Lincoln are the two larger towns of our county in northcentral Kansas. Denmark, a small Danish community centered right between these towns, was first settled in 1869. Some of the first settlers suffered tragedy at the hands of warring Indians, and those who survived returned to Junction City for a year before they came back to rebuild. This area is rich in history and each room of PrairieSide is filled with reading on the history of our area and state. While you visit here, you will not only appreciate the beauty of the area; you will find friendliness, hospitality, and a real connection with your agricultural heritage.

Guests to our part of the country also marvel at the architecture of limestone buildings and the post rock fences. This type of limestone rock, which is exclusive to our area in Kansas, is quarried from the land and has been used since the 1860's for building homes and fences.  Even today, people are still using this rock for landscaping projects and for facing new building structures.  Many tour buses travel to Denmark and the surrounding area to see the historic limestone buildings and the beauty of the rural area.  We have fun serving traditional Danish foods, relating a few fascinating stories about our past, and sending guests home with a few mementoes.*

Wilson Lake, just to the southwest of Sylvan Grove, and known as the clearest lake in the state of Kansas, is lined with beautiful sandstone rock formations.  Swimming, boating, rocket launching, and bicycling are all popular, and the lake will also be hosting a bass fishing tournament in September.

The community people enjoy working with each other to accomplish a number of fun and entertaining events throughout the year.  Both Sylvan Grove and Lincoln have modern school systems with the latest technology, and students win numerous awards in both academics and extracurricular activities.  The communities are proud of their young people's accomplishments and support them in their many endeavors throughout the year.  During the summer, youth participate in softball and baseball and enjoy the nearby lake.
